Ibirapuera – the Central Park of Sao Paolo

Ibirapuera – the Central Park of Sao Paolo

Another beautiful Saturday, another reason to explore another part of this big city. Only 30 minutes walk from my house is the biggest park in Sao Paolo. Originally swamp land, the area was mostly unused and after visits to New York and Paris the mayor of the city decided that Sao Paolo should also have a magnificant park. So to my surprise in the 1920s the city imported many Australian eucalypts and planted them in the swamp area to dry out the land and make it possible to build a park. Today it is a haven for all people from Sao Paolo and has many musuems as well as soccer ovals, basketball courts a lake and all other important elements that make up a great park. Gabi, Segala and I went there yesterday afternoon to see a great exhibition about painted bodies. It is a very large exhibition made up of mostly South American artists who aim to study and reveal the body with out any prejudice. I really enjoyed it and am very glad that I organised a youth/ student card before I came. It gives discounts at most places that we go in the city. The museum itself is very interesting because it is built like an ice berg. You can only see the tip of it above ground and then the rest is below.

After finishing at the museum we walked around the park and Gabi asked me to show her the Australian trees. I did notice some, of course the gum trees and the Morten bay figs but there were a few others that certainly I recognise from Australia but I don’t know if they are native to the continent. Gabi and Segala then found it very funny when I pointed out that the black swans swimming in the lake were also from Australia! It’s going to be very nice when I miss home to walk down there and check out the gums trees and pick up some leaves. Regardless of home sickness we are planning a picnic there some time soon and there is a Andy Warhol film festival in the modern art museum which I want to take a look at.

The only disappointing thing about the park is the number of people. As with anywhere else in Sao Paolo there are people enjoying the sunshine and the park everywhere. It’s nice to see the families and the dogs and the kids playing together but it would be nice to find some quiet places in this city as well.
