Maratomar

During my coaching visit to Campinas this week I found the closest thing to HASHH runs that I think I can here in Brazil, at least until I find an elusive club in Sao Paulo!

UniCAMP -one of the most highly regarded technical universities in Brazil hosted their annual 'maratomar' on Thursday evening, the literal translation is 'marathon drinking'. It is one of the most famous unofficial events on the university students calendar and involves a team of three running (or walking) 4km and drinking 7 cans of beer and different spots around campus and if they make it, celebrating at the end of the race with an all night party. Luckily the weather was great and the after party was really cool.

Only one person I know actually did the run this year - toneto - he lasted pretty well too but most of the runners didn't stay around too long at the party. Rumour has it that the party finished at around 5.30 (I made it home sometime after 3) just in time for some of them to get to class at 8am.

One of the most interesting things about my first Brazilian university party was that all alcoholic drinking was banned on the campus some years ago. The party was held outside on university grounds and no one seemed to mind, the only thing that the security of the university did was not let us use the bathrooms. I really don't know what the university was thinking - all it meant was that everybody was more creative at finding their own bathrooms!

The rest of the trip to Campinas from Wednesday afternoon to Saturday night was fun and productive as well. There was a parents and friends meeting on Saturday so I got to meet the families of some of the guys I work with.

So I guess now you know - coaching visits aren't actually designed for working but for 'cultural integration'.

Hugs L.
